Hello, thanks for visiting…

I’m Sarah, a Yorkshire-based writer, journalist and photographer. I have had a varied career since finishing university in London - teaching English in Paris; as wardrobe mistress for the RSC, touring Japan and Norway; personal dresser to actress Patricia Routledge and costume assistant for TV and film including the King’s Speech.

After studying an MA in literature and a stint of globe-trotting, I trained as a news reporter at the South London Press. Having met my husband on the journalism training course in Newcastle, I relocated to Northumberland to work as a feature writer and arts editor at the Newcastle Evening Chronicle. I have written for national and regional publications and websites as well as a guide book to Greenwich.

My best-selling guide book, Wild Guide North East England, was shortlisted for Travel Guide of the Year 2024. My next book, Wild Swimming Walks Yorkshire, is out in April 2025.

When not exploring wild places, you can find me browsing a book shop, hunting out a new café, visiting an art gallery or learning a new craft. I live in Ryedale, North Yorkshire, with my husband David, our three sons and a menagerie of pets.

  • My words and photographs have appeared in The Guardian, Daily Mail, The Independent, BBC Travel, Outdoor Swimmer, Britain magazine, Yorkshire Post, Living North, Yorkshire Living and Yorkshire Life.

  • I regularly host author and bookshop events and have interviewed writers including Julia Bradbury, Lauren Child, Paula Byrne, Susie Steiner and Rachel Hore.
