What to pack for a wild swimming walk

Swaledale

Whilst you could argue that you need very little for a wild swimming walk apart from a comfortable pair of shoes, a swimming costume and small towel, for more isolated hikes, or hikes in the shoulder months either side of high summer, appropriate clothing and some further equipment is essential. Here are some suggestions on what to pack for a swim walk:

  • A rucksack for all your gear (mine is a 25l one)

  • A sturdy pair of walking boots or shoes, preferably waterproof

  • A waterproof jacket, both to keep you dry and to give some protection from wind-chill

  • Layers of clothing that you can add or remove

  • A swimming costume for each swim spot so as not to spread any invasive species from one body of water to another

  • Aqua shoes for rocky river beds and waterfalls

  • A waterproof bag, or zip-lock bag, for stowing wet swim clothes

  • A lightweight hammam-style, microfibre or poncho-type towel

  • Something to stand on while getting changed - a small towel or mat

  • A basic first aid kit - waterproof plasters, blister plasters (sheep’s wool also does the trick in an emergency), antiseptic cream, tick remover

  • A paper OS map if it’s a remote hike

  • A mobile phone and fully-charged power bank

  • Food, snacks, water and a flask of something hot - tea/ coffee/ hot chocolate

  • Optional extras - a brightly-coloured tow float and hat for visibility
