Wild Guide Road Trip

It has been a journey of thousands of miles, from the wild frontiers of Northumberland to the sea-ravaged shores of Spurn Point, taking in secret coves, swimming rivers and waterfalls; summer hay meadows and ancient forests; lost ruins and sacred sites.

For the past 18 months I have been researching my new book, Wild Guide North East England. I have spent spent evenings poring over maps, plotting routes, then with itinerary in hand I hit the road to recce and photograph all the places on my long list. By September this year, I had pretty much finished the road trips and I spent several weeks at my desk frantically writing up the chapters, working closely with my editor, Victoria O’Dowd, and organising the huge amount of photographs I had amassed for the book.

My publishers are Wild Things Publishing, whose award-winning travel guides I have always admired, with their focus on hidden places and getting people outdoors, embracing wildness in its gentlest sense.

Wild Guide North East England covers Northumberland, the North Pennines, the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Wolds and East Yorkshire. There is an astonishing variety to the landscape within this region, interwoven with a fascinating history, from sacred pre-historic sites to more recent post-industrial and wartime ruins.

The book also includes the best local, seasonal foodie spots in this area as well as rustic havens to rest your head and beautiful sites to camp and glamp. It has been a true labour of love and I can’t wait to share the places I have discovered.

Here are a few photographs, which I hope give a flavour of what you can expect from the book, which is due out on May 1st 2023. It is available in all good bookshops and online and you can get yourself an author signed copy here!
