A Winter Picnic

One of my favourite places to take photos is at the coast. Living here in North Yorkshire, we have such a great choice of destinations with a stunning coastline dotted with fishing villages and seaside towns.

These coastal communities take on a very different feel during the winter months and I really love visiting them at this time of year.

For a winter trip out, the traditional seaside resort of Filey has a timeless, old-fashioned atmosphere with its fabulous sandy beaches, promenade and cobbled landing.

You can stride out along the huge expanse of sand for a bracing winter walk - interspersed with some essential bucket and spade fun, of course. At the far end of the sands, you'll find Filey Brigg, a dramatic low headland jutting out into the North Sea. It has great views to Flamborough, Bempton Cliffs and north to Scarborough.

The Brigg is the perfect spot for a beach picnic when the tide is out. We took our new Kelly Kettle, which makes a great outdoor brew, and headed onto the Brigg to fire it up.

It just requires a team effort to collect the necessary fuel such as sticks, pine cones or dry grass. Once you’ve gathered these, it’s a fast way to boil water. It works like a chimney with a fire lit in the base and hot flames which travel up the chimney. It certainly adds a element of adventure to any day out.
